WHO WE ARE

The Truth

As part of the Latinx community, I have noticed a stigma towards mental health. I have made it my mission to spread awareness of this growing pandemic. From personal experience, many of the members of our community dismiss the importance of reaching out to professionals. They don't want to take the shame of talking about their emotions to a stranger. Many of them state that a psychologist is just for the crazy people. They lack education of what talking to a psychologist can actually bring. This can sometimes contribute to  suicides, family feud, kids with trauma, and even dissociation from reality. We have many people suffering in silence because of stigmas.

Why this matters

Suffering Alone

As a first generation college student, I have learned everything on my own. I did not have the support that many of my peers had. I had to learn English on my own and navigate the terrors of a U.S school for the first time. That was the beginning of my anxiety path. I had to learn how to navigate through the up and downs of anxiety. Many times I felt like I was not good enough and questioned whether I should continue. I believe that if I had the support of my family when speaking about how I felt my story would be different. I look back now as a twenty-two year old and see the little girl fighting for a grasp of a helping hand. Like me, there are many kids who go through this everyday. Their parents are not educated on how to help or when to know when help is needed. Educating parents about mental health gives the kids a chance to have a conversation about how they are feeling. They will no longer have to suffer alone.
